- On antique receivers, the serial numbers may be found on the side of the gun body. Check the barrel on antique guns. Generally, the barrel may have the model number of an antique gun and old Winchesters in particular had markings on the barrel part identifying the type of gun model.
- Checked the serial number on my post-ban Bushmaster and it is L25XXXX. With yours having a higher number I would guess it to is post-ban and possibly before the ban expired in 2004, but with your serial number being 7 digits to mine being 6 yours might be after the ban sunset.
Jan 20, 2014 Spent some time last week with Bushmaster trying to find the original date of manufacture. No luck, records don't go back that far (LOL). Lady I spoke with told me any serial number L051000 or lower was an assembled Pre-Ban Rifle. 1978-New series of serial numbers started on 1-3-78 for 760's starting at B 7,400,000. New serial number range for 742's starting at B 6,000,000 1981-Model 760 ADL and BDL designations replaced with 7600 with straight comb stock and impressed checkering. Bolts were changed from 14 small locking lugs to 4 larger locking lugs. I decided to call Bushmaster today and was told by them that they started up a second factory to produce AR15s due to high demand. The new serial numbers were produced last fall at the new production facility. The older L series are still being produced at the original facility. So now you can get a Bushy with either prefix.
